Electronics industry to introduce 5,200 PMET jobs by 2025

DPM Heng said such will be possible under the refreshed Industry Transformation Map.

In less than three years, the electronics sector will be able to introduce 5,200 new professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMET) jobs and achieve growth in manufacturing value-added of 7.6% to $50b.

Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, Heng Swee Keat, said such will be under the refreshed Industry Transformation Map for the electronics industry.

“The refreshed Electronics ITM seeks to ride on the global growth momentum and cement Singapore’s position as a key manufacturing and research & development (R&D) hub for higher value-added electronic components,” Hang said in his speech at the Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC (ITAP) 2022.

To further strengthen the local talent pipeline, Hang said the government will work with Institutes of Higher Learnings (IHLs), and the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA).

Amongst projects that the government will undertake with its partners include the development of more semiconductor research, engineering and design talent to train 1,000 PhDs over the next 10 years.

The government will also work to provide more work-study training, immersion and internship opportunities for students.

To deepen the skillsets of graduates from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and groom them to take on senior technician or associate engineer roles, the government said it will encourage companies to utilise new schemes such as the Accelerated Pathway for Technicians and Assistant Engineers (Manufacturing).

For mid-career workers to take on good jobs within the electronics sector, the government will continue to promote the Career Conversion Programme (CCP) and Continuing Education and Training (CET) upskilling programmes.
